Zombies! Zombies! Zombies! Easily one of my favorite subjects to read about. This zombie horror book is easily going to become popular in the genre. Rachel Drummond, paints a very vivid and terrifying story based in Australia, about a family and the people they are acquainted with as they struggle to survive in their new and terrifying world.
I recently joined NetGalley.com, a book reviewing site, and this was the first story I was approved to read and post on my blog. This is the official description on NetGalley.
Sarah is a nurse at the Geelong hospital, going about her Boxing Day shift while her family recovers at home after indulging in the usual Christmas feasting. But when a wild-eyed patient is admitted that afternoon, she soon discovers a new virus taking root in the area.
Not wasting any time, Sarah and her family have to bug out before they too are taken out by the infected hordes amassing in the town. The virus is spreading rapidly and beers will have to be set aside in favour of running for their lives.
The South Forsaken is one family’s story in this zombie apocalyptic tale with an Aussie twist!
I really enjoyed this story, it wasn’t super heavy on the emotions, and it had stunning descriptions that make you stop and think about the horrors unfolding in front of you. I’m going to post two of my favorite sentences in the book. The first one in chapter eight says, “Sarah was able to see through the side mirror, the carnage they had caused, leaving a red carpet stretched out behind them that any horror premiere would be proud to claim.” The next occurs in chapter ten and said, “Whatever remained of the inhabitants was now likely smeared in macabre patterns throughout the house.” These types of descriptions hit really hard and catch your attention.
This book is a real thrill, and I have very little negative things to say about it. The only real problem I had was keeping up with all of the characters and where they came from. This book doesn’t just focus on one or two characters, it’s from several perspectives, and can be a little confusing. My personal favorite would either be Sarah or Seth, because they were probably the smartest and bravest, but you can decide for yourself!
The South Forsaken is set to release in one week, June 15th 2016! I definitely recommend this to any zombie loving reader, it was a lot of fun! I’d say young adults would like it most, but a regular adult would find it just as enjoyable. If you enjoy this title you will also enjoy any of the Max Brooks zombie books, The Enemy, Rot & Ruin, and you will also love The Walking Dead comic series!
4/5 on my official book rating. Seriously check this book out!
